does leveling up actually do anything for you, like armour or attack power or is it just for show?

there is speculation that it has to do with magic.

i also heard that it was to add extra hearts. you start with 4 or so, and get more by leveling up.

This isn't Zelda, you probably heard it from a mod or soething you still have the same hears, also I think Leveling up will affect your stats yeah.
Oh there also will be a choice of classic and survival for servers, survival as nowmal MC and Classic for building servers.
And a serverlist is comming soon.

Yet another update on the 1.8 and here there are:
We will have atuall windows. The size is like a half of a Half-step, so they're ony for decoration.
Next is the new farming options, you will be able to farm melons, and pumpkins, now there will grow slowly but wen they are fully grown they will spawn a random fruit next to it.

You can charge your bow, you push your arrow back to charge the shot just like in real-life.

We already mentioned the Enderman and the chickens,
also NPC villages and GIANT MUSHROOM!

New Dungeon styles, randomly spawned, so we will have a higher dungeon rate. Boss monsters included. :3

We will also have Underground ravines!
The night will no longer be pitch black, there will be new lighting. The night will look dark tanned blue.

I'm not really a fan of these new updates. Minecraft is going in the wrong direction if you ask me. I'm praying that we'll be able to play pre-1.8 Minecraft separately from 1.8.

i agree with you dunny. i liked it when it was 1.2 i believe. the bed update was when things started changing for the worse

Not really, for me the 1.8 will ruin it, also I hope there are game modes, like if you want to go classic, survival, adventure mode, that would be good.

Update: There will a new update on food.
Porchops can stack and we will have beef!

1.8 is supposed to give birth to separate game modes.

I'm actually beginning to look forward to 1.8 :3

Yeah, we will hvae stamina, so we have to eat food to regain health and stamina, but still we have so many food options, we can open up a restaurant.

There needs to be a funny-ish feature for comic relief. Like the ability to combine 5 sets of shears to pick up an entire sheep, put it in your inventory and cook it in a furnace to get cooked lambchops or something, you know.

That's what the rumors say. A while ago Pigmen were going to be in the game but they never reached, we still have Zombie pigman but those are in the Nether, by making that little Pigtales of theirs it's a subliminal message to inform the players that pigmen will be added and they will build villages! At least that's my opinion.
Also they say that 1.8 will come out this weekend! Can it be true? Maybe *sniff* Maybe.

it's not too different, but the hunger bar is kinda stupid.
